Life on the Farm
Windy Meadows Kennels is a Canadian Kennel Club registered, home-based kennel owned and operated by Tom & Ernestine Power and family. It is located on a working farm in Branch, St. Mary’s Bay, about 140 kms southwest of St. Johns.
In 1976, after years of living and working in Toronto, the Powers decided that their family had outgrown big city life. They packed up their young daughters and huge Newfoundland dog and left the bustle of Toronto for the call of home. They bought some land, some sheep, and started farming. That was a few years ago now, and both the family and the farm have grown since then.
The Powers first got into Border Collies to help with herding sheep, and fell in love with the breed. So intelligent and loyal, they were wonderful additions to their farming family. Australian Shepherds were added to assist with the growing number of cattle and sheep. This super loyal breed found a permanent home with the Powers as well.
When the Powers decided to expand the kennel almost 20 years ago, they focused primarily on Golden Retrievers and Shetland Sheepdogs. These beautiful breeds are wonderful with children and fit readily into almost any family. A few years ago, the hypoallergenic, non-shedding Havanese were added at the insistence of the grandchildren who fell in love with the friendly, bouncy disposition of the breed.
While the Powers’ vision has grown, their dream has never wavered. Their niche is in providing puppies that make wonderful family pets. While several of their dogs have achieved Canadian Champion status in the show ring, their focus is to breed and raise all their dogs to be healthy, happy dogs with winning temperaments.
The Powers know that adding a pet to your family is a major consideration. Your new dog is going to be an active and embraced member of your family for years to come. When you come to visit, you will meet a cheerful, intelligent, well-adjusted puppy that has been raised in an active family lifestyle on the farm. All their puppies get a great deal of socialization before they leave for their new homes. They're exposed to other dogs, cats, horses, rabbits, ducks and hens. They also spend a fair amount of time playing with the five grandchildren, who are perfect puppy playmates!
All puppies ready to go to their new homes will have had their first vaccination, been dewormed twice, and micro chipped. They will be registered with the Canadian Kennel Club and sold with a non-breeding agreement. All puppies come with a written, two-year health and temperament guarantee as well as health insurance.
We're old fashioned farmers, which means we don't have a computer at the house. The only way to get in touch with us is by calling.
